Despite trying to maintain good relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Recep Tayyip Erdogan chose to clearly position himself against Russia’s decision to recognize two regions in eastern Ukraine as independent.
“Such a step is unacceptable. Russia’s decision to recognize the so-called Donetsk and Luhansk Republics is a clear violation not only of the Minsk agreements, but also of Ukraine’s political unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity. We strongly oppose this decision of Moscow“, It is said in the written statement of the ministry quoted by the Turkish media.
The statement further underlined Ankara’s commitment to preserving Ukraine’s political unity and territorial integrity, while urging the parties involved to respect international law. Turkey, a NATO member, shares maritime borders with both Ukraine and Russia in the Black Sea.
While buying S400 advanced defense systems from Moscow, Turkey has sold its sophisticated military drones to Kiev. Although it has sought to strengthen cooperation with Russia in the fields of defense and energy, Ankara has also opposed Moscow’s policies in Syria and Libya, as well as the annexation of the Crimean Peninsula in 2014.
