US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Gabriel Escobar, one of the US State Department’s best experts on Balkan affairs, insists that all Western Balkan countries must join the European Union.
In an interview with the Greek newspaper “To Vima”, the senior official described the region’s EU membership as a necessity to bring security and stability to all of Europe. The Ukraine crisis reminded us once again why the US and the EU need each other, he said. In the same interview, Escobar also commented on the developments in the Democratic Party in our country. He clearly stated that Albania must leave behind the past.
“We have a very good relationship with the Democratic Party. A strong democracy needs a strong opposition. It is sad what happened to the DP at this moment. “
Escobar positions himself against Berisha, whom he accuses of pursuing “an extremely divisive and anti-American rhetoric”, which “incredibly replaces the aspect that Albanians left behind in the past, corruption and disruption”.
“I hope that the members of the Democratic Party and the Albanian people leave behind the past and look to the future. “I hope that what happened does not bring back the bad days, when corruption characterized the view of many people in the region about Albania.”
He further expressed concern about the impact that third countries could have on the Balkan region, including Russia and China, and did not include Turkey, which he recalled being a member of NATO and helping to maintain peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
