The World Health Organization requires that booster doses of coronavirus vaccines be given initially to people with weaker immunity.
At a news conference on Friday, the WHO said it was recommending a booster dose of the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine, starting with high-priority groups, four to six months after full vaccination.
Last year, the WHO called on rich countries to declare a moratorium on boosting doses by the end of 2021. This call was almost completely ignored.
The United Nations says vaccine protection is fading over time.
Numerous studies have shown that booster doses of vaccines restore immunity levels and offer strong protection against serious illness, including the Delta and Omicron variants of the coronavirus.
“Boosting doses are part of the vaccination program, but that does not mean unlimited use for all ages,” said Kate O’Brien, director of immunization and vaccines.
“We continue to have a high focus on vaccinating high-priority groups”, she said.
The World Health Organization has supported the delivery of reduced-dose vaccines produced by Pfizer-BioNTech to children 5 years of age and older.
Other countries, including the United States and Canada, gave the go-ahead for child immunization last fall.
