A Russian checkpoint in the southeastern region of Zaporizhzhia has become the only relatively safe way for Ukrainians to try to leave the occupied southern areas into Ukrainian-held territory.
But the latest videos circulating on social networks show that vehicles are unable to pass.
The mayor of Melitopol (Russian-occupied territory), Ivan Fedorov, said on Ukrainian television on Tuesday that “evacuation from the occupied territories is the biggest problem. Evacuation is almost impossible today.”
He explained that people were trying to leave the occupied territories of Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk and Luhansk through the Vasylivka checkpoint, with some on the road for seven days, sleeping in their cars.
“Today, more than 5,000 people, over 1,200 cars have gathered there,” Fedorov said.
According to CNN, he reported the deaths of five people waiting to leave in recent days, but did not explain the cause of death.
“People can’t even go and buy food for themselves. The only condition on which the Russians allow people to go shopping in the city is to leave all their documents (passport, driver’s license, etc.) and then collect them when they return”said Fedorov.
