Top Channel journalist Muhamed Veliu was able to build the chronology of what happened in the last 24 hours in the life of Andrzej Izdebski, one of the most well-known arms dealers of Polish origin.
On the morning of Saturday, June 18, 2022, the 73-year-old Polish man in the company of several friends, among them a former director of the state-owned arms sales company MEICO, went haycking on Mount Dajt.
Then they had lunch and came to Tirana. The former MEICO director called him in the evening to ask him if he was satisfied. Andrzej Izdebski told him that he felt a chest pain.
Two days later, on the afternoon of June 20, he was found dead in bed in an apartment near the Agimi buildings, as a result of a cardiac arrest.
He fled Poland in December 2020 to escape an investigation after failing to fulfill contracts with the Polish government to provide 1,241 respirators worth $53 million.
A former director of MEICO, one of the people who met Izdebski for the last time, told Top Channel journalist Muhamed Veliu, that Andrzej Izdebski had first gone to Turkey, then to Serbia to arrive in Albania at the end of 2021. .
In order to fulfill the conditions of obtaining a permanent residence permit in our country, Andrzej Izdebski registered a new business company named “‘Trade Invest & More’ sh.pk”. The company UNIMESKO, registered in 2011, through which it had bought weapons from the Albanian state company MEICO to take to Africa, was also reactivated in the NRC.
Liljana Zyla, the wife of an important military man in the years 2005-2013, contacted by Top Channel, denied her involvement in the arms trade with the Pole Izdebski.
“All insinuations that I or my husband are involved in arms trade or trafficking with Andrzej Izdebski through his company UNIMESCO are baseless and slanderous which will be answered in court. I have never been a partner of the UNIMESCO company. My only connection with Andrzej Izdebski is that I was a shareholder in the company “Wind Sun Water Initiative”, to implement a project in the field of wind energy, approved to be implemented in Zare of Saranda in 2012 and renewed as prior permission in 2014″, Ms. Zyla told Top Channel.
Tomasz Koztowski, a journalist for the largest Polish newspaper “Fakt”, has been in Tirana for several days to investigate the stay in Albania of 73-year-old Izdebski. In an interview for Top Channel he said:
“It is a story full of mysteries because Andrzej Izdebski was a mysterious man. For many years he exercised his activity between Poland and Albania. He was an arms dealer and had established strong connections with high-level military personnel. He brought respirators to Poland, but they were not certified. Polish authorities sought his arrest but he had left Poland. In Albania he felt safe because he had friends. Our readers are very interested in this event as it is a very big scandal in Poland”.
