A Danish court today sentenced a British sailor to 18 months in prison for his role in the fatal collision in the Baltic Sea where two people lost their lives.
Helicopters had searched for the bodies of the missing sailors for two days after the crash but gave up after finding a body on the capsized ship.
“The 30-year-old British man who was driving the MV Scot Carrier was sentenced to a year and a half in prison by a Copenhagen court for the collision in which two Danish sailors lost their lives,” the prosecution said.
They added that the driver of the vehicle had been drunk and found guilty of manslaughter, and will be deported from Denmark after sentencing.
The serious accident happened on the night of December 13 in the waters between the Swedish port Istad and the Danish island of Bornholm.
Danish fisherman Karin Hoj, was hit by the big British carrier and capsized, killing the two sailors on board.
