In addition to the unexplained crisis of flights in the tourist season, an American Alaska Airlines flight was blocked for hours by the personal conflict of two pilots who refused to fly with each other, according to local media.
Passengers on a flight from Washington to San Francisco were grounded for more than two hours after the plane’s pilot and co-pilot got into a heated argument with each other.
Surprisingly, the airline’s statement said the pilots had “done the right thing” in the circumstances.
Alaska Airlines said it all stemmed from a “professional dispute” between two pilots that forced flight AS1080 back to the departure gate.
The plane had been delayed for some time by bad weather anyway, before the vulgar fight in the cockpit started.
One passenger commented: “…after we waited on the plane for the storm to pass, the two pilots brought him back to the exits because they couldn’t stand each other.”
“Very unprofessional. The flight attendants are trying to calm us down but I have no idea what’s going on.”
Alaska Airlines said the decision to change pilots was the right one, for the sake of flight safety: “Although it was an unfortunate situation, for the sake of safety, the pilots did the right thing by turning the plane around. Both the captain and the first officer are being evaluated by the management. They were deemed fit to continue flying and the aircraft continued its journey to San Francisco.”
Many passengers agreed with the decision, commenting: “Of course we don’t want to fly with two guys fighting in the cockpit, that would be a recipe for disaster.”
