Two police officers in the Philippines have been found dead and three others wounded in a gun battle with federal anti-drug agents, during a covert operation that went as no worse, state media reported.
The two National Police officers confronted gunmen with agents of the anti-drug unit in Quezon on Wednesday night, but in the infiltration operation to apprehend the traffickers, both sides appear to have turned out to be police officers, disguised as drug buyers or sellers.
The exact circumstances of the exchange of fire have not yet been clarified and the authorities of the two law enforcement agencies have launched parallel investigations.
“So far, what is clear. Is that the police unit was conducting a legal operation,” said National Police spokesman Derrick Carreon.
“We will continue to investigate the documents, but the priority now is to care for the injured,” Carreon added.
Anti-drug unit spokesman Brig. Gen. Ildebrandi Usana said that the incident, “although it was serious, will not affect the cooperation and coordination between the two law enforcement agencies and their commitment to the fight against drugs.”
Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has led what has been known as the “war on drugs” since coming to power in 2016. But the fierce campaign has often been criticized for its iron fist and indifference between culprits and innocent people.
