With her impressionistic face, once aspiring model Carré Otis was contacted by modeling agents as soon as her photo fell on the desk of the chief of the largest modeling agency.
At the age of 16 she signed with ‘Elite Model Management’ – where supermodels have also been created as well Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford e Helena Christensenwrites in its report the British daily “The Sun”.
As a runaway parent Carré believed modeling was her ticket to independence and consequently quickly became a well-known face of the industry in the 1980s and 90s.
The young American appeared on the covers of the most popular fashion magazines and once shared the cover of Vogue with Linda Evangelista.
But behind the splendor of success, the modeling industry had a whole hidden world of obscurity.
A few weeks after coming to Paris for her new career Carré was sent to the address where she claims she was regularly raped by the director of the agency Gerald Mariewho at the time was associating with Linda.
Carré is one of 13 girls who have sued for continued rape by Mariet as they worked for him in the 1990s, though he denies the allegations.
The revelations are made in a scandalous documentary of the British network Sky entitled ‘Fashion’s Darkest Secret’.
It details how world-renowned modeling agents such as Marie, John Casablancas, Jean Luc-Brunel and Claude Haddad collaborated to create a culture of silent exploitation and rape within the industry that has lasted for decades.
In the documentary, an employee of the Elite agency says that Marie often mentioned his philosophy that “virgin girls were not photogenic”.
Whistleblower Omar Harfouch says in the documentary: “Once they came to the agency they should have lost their virginity immediately, and here we are talking about 14, 15, 16 year old girls.”
He also reveals that the maniac Marie kept records of the models he had gone with, their ages and when they had lost their virginity.
Omar claims: “He and other people in the Elite kept notes and competed over who slept with the most model girls.”
In the documentary aired today in Britain, Carré – and two other victims of the industry – show what has passed into the hands of modeling agents.
Carré was 16 when he signed with Elite Model in 1985.
After staying in the New York offices she was sent to Paris to stay with Marie, who headed the European branch of Elite.
“Being naive and weak, I thought staying at the boss’s house would be a good thing, I thought I was special.”
“I thought something good would finally happen but I had no idea where I was going.”
Carré says he was asked to get a cocaine visa a day by bosses to keep the weight off, and that Marie constantly raped him in his apartment where he lived and his girlfriend, Canadian supermodel Linda.
“I was in a difficult situation… he had all the power and I could not resist. I depended on him for food, money, shelter, he carried my passport. “I was only 17 years old.”
Former Calvin Klein model says the abuse happened when Linda was not home, and in fact the model often moved between New York and Paris.
Linda, who divorced Marie in 1993, has already spoken out in support of Carré and other girls who have suffered severe sexual and psychological abuse by modeling agents.
Carré, now 53, says: “I do not believe she knew, she was young and none of us had it easy.”
The mother of two now lives in Colorado as she adds: “I believe that abuse was part of the strategy, it is what happens in these situations to keep the victims silent.”
The other American complainant Jill Dodd, 62, also says he was raped by Marie when she was 20 in Paris in the late 1980s.
She says the agency sent her to parties where models were supposed to be present, making the agencies function as a luxury escort service for the rich.
In this way she became acquainted with the millionaire arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi in Monte Carlo.
Jill says she liked the company of the elderly Saudi millionaire but did not know he had chosen her in a photo catalog and paid the price to be associated with her.
“I became his girlfriend but later found out that he had paid the agency $ 50,000 to bring me to that party, and he had done the same with other women.”
Jill says: “I felt like a prostitute, these were men in their 40s and they manipulated me. “It took me decades to get over the shame.”
