The bodies of four swimmers have recently been found filled with horrific bites of carnivorous piranha fish in a river in Paraguay.
A 22-year-old man who was bathing in the Paraguay River, south of the capital Asuncion, suddenly disappeared from the sight of family members accompanying him.
His body was found 45 minutes later with limbs severely bitten by piranhas.
On Monday, the body of a 49-year-old man was found floating in the same river near the town of Puerto Rosario.
Doctors confirmed that he had died from drowning but had numerous piranha bites on his face and legs, reports the local network The Nation.
Two other people were found dead with piranha bites on their bodies in the Tebicuary River on Sunday, according to reports.
Other non-fatal attacks by piranhas have been reported by local river swimmers, about 12 of whom from the Bella Vista swimming club in Itapua.
Piranhas do not usually attack humans but an increasing number of incidents have been reported during their breeding season, from October to March.
Biologist Julio Capli warns swimmers in the area not to enter the waters at the bottom of which plants grow.
He says in these places piranhas can build their nests and are willing to attack to protect the eggs.
Capri says that if piranhas bite them they do so in the lower part of the limbs and unlike horror movies, they do not jump out of the water.
