The German government wants to temporarily keep additional coal-fired power plants on standby for the next two years to avoid a possible power outage in the event that natural gas supplies from Russia are suddenly reduced, German officials said on Wednesday.
Germany is trying to give up Russian gas due to the war in Ukraine and expects to complete this by 2024.
But the German government fears that Moscow could cut off supplies abruptly in response to economic sanctions imposed on Russia by Western countries, including Germany.
A draft law approved by the German government ensures that coal-fired power plants that were previously planned to be shut down remain operational.
Germany already has several other coal and oil power plants on standby that can be activated in an emergency.
Government spokeswoman Christiane Hoffmann said the decision was significant “at the time of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the tense situation in the energy markets,” the Associated Press reported.
“The goal of completing the coal-fired power supply in Germany ideally by 2030 and the climate targets remain what they are,” she said.
