German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is heading to Ukraine and Russia this week in a bid to help ease escalating tensions after Western intelligence officials warned that Russia could launch a Russian attack on Ukraine within days.
Germany is one of the countries that has called on its citizens to leave Ukraine as soon as possible.
Ahead of his first visits as chancellor to Kiev on Monday and Moscow on Tuesday for meetings with the Ukrainian and Russian presidents, Mr Scholz reiterated his warning to Russia, as he called for diplomatic efforts to continue.
“It is our duty to prevent a war in Europe by sending a clear message to Russia that any military aggression would have serious consequences for Russia and its prospects, and that we are united with our allies,” he said. Scholz in the German parliament on Friday.

However, a source from the German government told the Reuters news agency that Berlin did not expect “concrete results” from the talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Meanwhile Germany’s deputy chancellor and economy minister Robert Habeck said in an interview Sunday that Europe could be on the brink of war.
Mr Habeck gave no details but referred to the massive gathering of the two countries’ armed forces facing each other.
