German Finance Minister Christian Lindner said on Tuesday that Germany had made it very clear that Russia would face serious consequences if it invaded Ukraine, but he did not say whether the Nord Stream 2 pipeline would be canceled.
US President Joe Biden warned on Monday that if Russia invades Ukraine “there will be no Nord Stream 2”. He did not say specifically how he would stop it, but stressed that he was in a joint denominator with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz as the West is making intensive diplomatic efforts to avert a war in Europe.
Mr Scholz said the United States and Germany had the same approach to Ukraine, Russia and sanctions, but did not directly confirm plans for Nord Stream 2, nor did he publicly mention the pipeline during his one-day visit to Washington.
Mr. Lindner, speaking at a virtual conference hosted by Deutsche Bank, said he would not speculate on concrete measures envisaged for sanctions against Russia. “We are very clear that violating the (Ukrainian) territorial integrity would have serious consequences,” he said.
