The number of coronavirus infections in Germany has dropped significantly, however, authorities warn that the risk of the disease has not yet been overcome.
Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach told the Bild am Sonntag newspaper that Germany was preparing for mutations and new variants of the coronavirus. According to him, “the Omicron variant that is very sticky can become as deadly as Delta”.
“This,” Lauterbach said, “would be an absolute ‘killer’ variant.” The intervals in which the new variants replace the old ones are getting shorter and shorter and this is quite worrying, according to experts. Germany has ordered vaccines that protect against Omicron variants. Lauterbach said that “our goal is to have as many vaccines as possible for every citizen, regardless of which variant appears. “Soon we will have vaccines for both the Omicron variant and the Delta variant.”
The figures immediately show that over the past seven days the number of infections nationwide has continued to decline. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported that last week there were only 834 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants. In the first week of April, the German coalition’s draft law on compulsory vaccination for people over the age of 60 was rejected in the German Bundestag.
Nor did the Union proposal, which provided for the situation to be decided in the autumn, if compulsory vaccination would be required, receive a parliamentary majority and was rejected.
