Officials urge citizens to conserve energy, especially gas. In Germany, there are fears that Russia could use the maintenance of Nord Stream as a pretext to block the gas.
The President of Germany’s Federal Network Agency, Klaus Müller, is afraid of the complete interruption of Russian gas deliveriesand calls on citizens to save energy now.
Work will soon begin on adjustments and annual maintenance checks of the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline, which connects directly between the two countries. At this time Russian gas is not flowing, while the works usually last ten days.
But, as he warns, this time it could be “long-term political maintenance”. In such a case, Germany should “think seriously about savings”, he said, given that the heating season officially starts in twelve weeks.
On Thursday, the Minister of Economy Robert Habeck warned that regular works on the Nord Stream (which will start on July 11) could be used as a political excuse by the Kremlin to stop the transport of gas to Germany.
As Habeck said, the gas supply for the summer period is assured, but then the problems will come.
Aggregates as a solution?
The head of the Grid Agency, which is also responsible for energy, calls on citizens to check the heating systems as soon as possible, make the necessary repairs and save gas. He called on technicians to focus on heating and hot water installations in the coming period.
Families, says Müller, “should already discuss whether they will maintain the usual temperature in each room during the winter, or whether it might be colder in some room or place.”
According to him, the state will take all the necessary measures to supply gas and equip families, hospitals and necessary institutions. But it is not known whether this will be enough to supply sufficient quantities of gas. /DW
