US airstrikes against Iranian-backed militias in eastern Syria will encourage terrorism in the region, a senior security official in Tehran has said.
Washington has announced that it has carried out airstrikes on pro-Iranian militia positions in eastern Syria, near the border with Iraq, in response to rocket attacks against US targets in Iraq.
“America’s recent actions strengthen and expand Islamic State activities in the region.” said Ali Shamkhani, a member of Iran’s Supreme Council. He made the remarks during a meeting in Iran with Iraqi Foreign Minister Faud Hussein.
“Attack on resistance forces against terrorists is the beginning of a new round of organized terrorism.” he was quoted as saying by Reuters. Iraqi militia officials said one fighter was killed and four others were injured in the attacks. The Biden administration has made it clear that it will act in order to avoid a major escalation of the situation in the region.
Shamkhani said “we will confront the US plan to revive terrorism in the region”, but gave no further details. Western officials and some Iraqi leaders have blamed Iranian-backed groups for being involved in deadly rocket attacks on US targets in Iraq this month.
