Trainers, local military, but also volunteers arrived from abroad to join the international brigade of Ukrainian forces, wanted by President Volodymir Zelensky since the early hours of the battle.
At the International Center for Peace and Security, otherwise known as the Yavoriv test site, several foreign languages were spoken before 30 Russian missiles destroyed everything. One of the basic tasks was to teach young recruits how to use rocket launchers against Russian aircraft. A training center where young people passed before heading east to the front or to Kiev.
Initially, Ukrainian Defense Ministry spokesman Markian Lubkivsky did not confirm that there were foreigners among the victims at the Moscow-targeted shooting range, but over the hours it became clear that there were not only Ukrainians there. In fact, Yavoriv had returned to the point where volunteers from all over the world gathered to help Ukraine, from the US, Europe to Australia.
According to Dutch media, an unspecified number of volunteers from the Netherlands were injured in the attack. This was confirmed for the Dutch daily De Telegraaf by the coordinator of the volunteer militia group, Gert Snitselaar. According to De Telegraaf, the veteran of the Kosovo war, Joyce Koster, had always passed through this center. Moscow says its military has killed 180 “foreign mercenaries” in the attack. However, this figure is thought to have been greatly inflated by the Russians, as Ukrainians speak of 35 casualties.
