The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, said that the request that the Serbian Government address to the Kosovo Government to hold Serbian elections in the territory of Kosovo, did not aim to bring recognition of independence from Serbia.
“I have never intended to bring the recognition of Serbia through this correspondence. I knew that this is not done, but no one can ask me not to recognize the Republic of Kosovo, the independence of our country “, said Kurti in an interview for the public broadcaster of Kosovo.
The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vuiqi., Said on Tuesday that Kosovo has requested that the Government of Serbia directly ask the Government of Kosovo to allow the holding of presidential and parliamentary elections on April 3, ie “that Serbia recognizes Kosovo”.
But Kurti said he had asked Kosovo and Serbia to reach an agreement on holding these elections in Kosovo. He said that Belgrade did not accept that his Government send a request to the Kosovo executive, but tried to do so at the level of liaison officers.
“We have said that the liaison offices in Pristina and Belgrade could be used as logistical channels of communication, but normal communication should be government to government. “Instead of going from government to government, they aimed to be the liaison officer with the liaison officer,” said Kurti.
Meanwhile, commenting on the news that the Government of Kosovo has rejected Quint’s proposal for holding Serbian elections in Kosovo, Kurti said that the Quint states have also asked for an agreement.
“Quint is also seeking an agreement. “They also agree that there should be some agreement between the two parties,” said Kurti.
Quint countries are: United States, Great Britain, Italy, Germany and France.
Otherwise, the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, after a meeting with Kosovo Serb representatives, said that Kosovo Serbs will vote in Serbia for the April 3 elections.
The Kurti government had also refused to allow voting in Kosovo for a Serbian referendum held earlier this year, saying Serbs with dual citizenship could vote through the post office and the Liaison Office.
The international community has repeatedly called on the Government of Kosovo to find ways to hold Serbian elections.
The last parliamentary elections, which Serbia has organized for the Serb community in Kosovo, were those of June 21, 2020.
Those elections were held according to an earlier practice, where the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe’s mission in Kosovo collected the votes. Those votes were then counted in Raska and Vranje, two border towns in Serbia.
This practice has been established since 2017 and the Kosovo authorities have allowed this.
