Interior Minister Bassam Malawi announced that Lebanese authorities have seized a large quantity of kapagon hidden in a tea shipment to Saudi Arabia.
“The tireless work of the police led to the seizure of the captagon, who was heading to Togo in Africa,” he told a news conference.
The final destination of the drugs would be Saudi Arabia, which the UN office says is the largest consumer of the stimulant derived from phenethylene-based banned drugs.
The amphetamine tablets are believed to have been produced in Lebanon or Syria, and were hidden in the shipment of 7 tonnes of tea departing from the port of Beirut, the official added.
Saudi Arabia has imposed trade sanctions on Beirut after capturing a captagon-like consignment on a consignment of pomegranates last year.
Lebanon is embroiled in a severe economic crisis and sanctions, so it seeks to improve ties with the Persian Gulf countries by showing willingness.
In another major seizure in the port of Beirut last month, about nine million captagon tablets were found hidden in fake oranges.
