“The Bucha massacre is just one example of what Russia has done to Ukraine in these 41 days of war,” President Volodymyr Zelensky told the UN Security Council, urging member states to act urgently against Russia.
Speaking to the council for the first time since Russia invaded Ukraine on this, Zelensky said Russian troops have killed civilians and raped women. He accused Russia of genocide. And for this he brought evidence. Zelensky presented the council with a video showing Ukrainians killed, some burned and disfigured.
Zelensky: The Russian army has deliberately killed everyone who serves our country, just for fun, they have shot and killed women, children, and tried to burn their bodies. I am addressing you on behalf of those who are suffering for the loss of the closest people, on behalf of those who were treacherously shot in the head and tortured and left on the streets.
Zelensky, who himself was in Bucha to watch the massacre up close, said Europe must act now and hold Russia and Putin accountable by bringing them to justice. The Ukrainian president also said that Russia’s participation in the UN threatens global security, so according to him Russia should be excluded. If the council can not do that, said Zelensky, then it should be dissolved, because otherwise it proves that they have nothing in hand except discussion.
As Zelensky’s speech was applauded from the hall, the president added that the Russians with their actions are no different from terrorists.
Zelensky: Now the whole world can see what Russia did in Bucha while keeping the country under its rule, but the world still has to see what they have done in other cities of our country, cities may be different but crimes are the same.
Earlier on Tuesday, Zelensky questioned the idea of a face-to-face meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin following the recent events. The Bucha massacre marked a turning point in the escalation of the war in Ukraine and added to the anger of internationals who have promised new sanctions very soon. More than 400 dead bodies have been seen on the outskirts of keivit, 300 of which in the town of Bucha alone, all of them civilians, found on the city streets with their hands tied and with bullets to the head, many of them visible that they were tortured before being shot to death.
