A giant explosion has destroyed this afternoon the famous Saratoga hotel in the center of the Cuban capital Havana, destroying several floors of it.
There are reports of guests trapped on the upper floors of the hotel as the blast destroyed large parts of the building.
It is unknown at this time what caused the incident at Hotel Saratoga – nor the exact number of victims or those trapped.
The injured who were outside the hotel said the noise was like a bomb.
Local media say some people have been rescued at the roots by volunteers.
Several witnesses posted pictures of the tragedy online.
“A few minutes ago a powerful explosion at the Saratoga Hotel in Old Havana, in the center of the capital. Ambulances and police are at the scene, “wrote user @Cuba_Libre.
Another wrote: “Urgent. Just before a loud explosion at the Saratoga Hotel in Havana. “Buildings a few dozen meters away were shaken.”
The videos showed many people standing outside the half-ruined hotel, some not believing their eyes.
The popular hotel in downtown Havana’s Old Town has 96 rooms and a terrace with pool.
Hotel Saratoga is described on Wikipedia as ‘a neoclassical luxury hotel, located in Paseo del Prado, Old Havana, opposite Fuente de la India.’
Originally built in 1880 the building was remodeled into a hotel in 1933 and most recently reopened in 2005.
