In the library “Redon” of Durrës, a special activity was held to promote the book “Katitzi” by the famous Swedish writer Katarina Taikon, translated by Sokol Demaku, which is a well-known book that deals with the phenomenon of discrimination against children of color. .
The event was attended by the Mayor of Durrës Emiriana Sako, the Ambassador of Sweden to Albania, Elsa Håstad, representatives of the Roma and Egyptian community, writers, teachers and students.
Although it is a children’s book, the message it conveys is quite current: all children are equal and have equal rights to education and integration into society. The book ‘Katitzi’ which deals with the story of a Roma child, has had many echoes and a great success in Sweden. Mayor Sako after appreciating the sharp social message conveyed by this book and its educational values stated that the phenomenon of social discrimination due to color is encountered in daily life towards the Municipality of Durrës and the focus of her work is social inclusion.
Sako said that in order to better address this social phenomenon, the Directorate of Social Service is functional in the Municipality of Durrës, where a part of its staff deals only with the treatment and solution of the problems of the Roma and Egyptian community. Among other things, this directorate deals with ensuring the social integration of the children of this community in the same way as all other children.
Also, in the area where the Roma community is mostly concentrated, in Nishtulla, the Multifunctional Community Center operates, in which individual and group psychological counseling is provided, psycho-social support for individuals and marginalized families, etc. Also, in this center is offered the daily service for preschool children as well as food meals for about 350 children and adults, but thanks to the help from foreign donors are treated about 1700 inhabitants of this community.
Sweden’s Ambassador to Albania, Elsa Håstad, stated that she dreamed of presenting this fantastic story in Albania and that this is a book that has changed her generation, a book – she added – that made us all dream that one day to become like the Roma girl Katitzi. The Roma community in Sweden has been discriminated against for hundreds of years, Hastad said, but only in the 1950s and 1960s did it begin to be seen differently, integration began and they gained their rights.
Mayor Sako also stated that reading as many books as possible not only broadens the horizons of children, but makes them even more aware about the world and society where they live as well as about various social phenomena. Sako said that in the framework of promoting interest in reading, the Municipality of Durrës will set up two other libraries that will operate in two different areas of the city, one of the libraries will be exactly in the building of Social Housing, in Neighborhood no. 17, while the other library will be at a building in Neighborhood No. 4.
Also in order to increase the interest for the book, in the public spaces of Durrës are placed some ‘book houses’ in order to strengthen even more the connection of the citizens with the book. In these ‘lodges’ anyone can get a book for free to read it, but leaving there in exchange another book thus continuing this ritual of reading. This initiative will reawaken the desire to read to all citizens, including children and young people of different age groups.
In the Swedish book promotion the children read parts of the book as well as exhibited their paintings with the theme of anti-social discrimination due to color giving important messages not only for their age but for the whole society.
