Michael Owen is the last Englishman to win the Golden Ball. The talented former striker was only 22 years old when he left behind Raul and Kahn in 2001. Three years later came the transfer from Liverpool to Real Madrid, a moment he experienced a lot. One season lasted adventures in La Liga, to return to the Premier League.
“I did not sleep for a week in a row when I transferred to Real. I was shaking and crying on the way to the airport, I am not ashamed to admit it. You are convinced that you will be a Liverpool player for the rest of your life, but then you sit down and think: ‘Oh God, it’s Real Madrid, I will regret it forever if I reject them‘.
It was an opportunity to try a different championship, to enjoy a different country, a different language and a different culture. We are talking about the opportunity to wear the merengue jersey and play with names like Zidane, Figo, Beckham and Roberto Carlos. However, two seconds later I was thinking: ‘No, I want to stay in Liverpool for the rest of my life‘.
I felt good about myself. I had just won the ‘Golden Ball’, so I would not have gone there thinking everyone was better than me. In fact I could not wait to train to show everyone that I was good enough.
When you go to a new club, you always want to get everyone’s respect right away. Respect from the fans or even the manager may come later. But, I wanted to immediately gain the respect of my teammates“, Remembers Owen./supersport
