The war in Ukraine has forced Bosnian Serb nationalists to postpone plans to withdraw their region from Bosnia and Herzegovina’s national institutions, Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik said.
Dodik spoke on June 6th during a Republika Srpska parliamentary session where he called for support against the imposition of sanctions on Russia for its occupation of Ukraine.
The session discussed “information on the international political and security situation, and the role of Republika Srpska.”
Dodik triggered the worst political crisis in Bosnia and Herzegovina since the end of the 1990s war, after declaring late last year that Republika Srpska, the ethnic Serb entity, would withdraw from the Western Balkan country’s joint army. by the highest judicial body and by the tax administration.
The Republika Srpska parliament voted in December to begin work on a non-binding motion aimed at paving the way for secession from Bosniak national institutions.
But the ‘changed political conditions’ caused by the war in Ukraine had caused a delay, said Dodik, whose plan is backed by Moscow.
Dodik, a Serb member of Bosnia’s tripartite presidency, has repeatedly called for the secession of the Serb entity from the rest of Bosnia, which he called an “experiment by the international community” and an “impossible and imposed state”.
The international community has said that the separation of the military, police and tax administration of the Serb unit from the central government of Bosnia and Herzegovina would be in conflict with the 1995 Dayton Accords that ended the wars in Bosnia.
