A statue of Moliere has been erected for the first time in Versailles, to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the birth of one of the most prominent figures in world literature, and the man who laid the foundations of French comedy.
The 1.80-meter-high sculpture, which weighs 250 kilograms, was placed next to the Rive Gauche, a deliberate reference because Moliere, or Jean-Baptist Poquelin, staged his performances precisely in the gardens of the famous castle.
“I wanted to do something that was a classic and traditional form of celebration, but at the same time to renew this approach to something more tangible. The sculpture seems to complete this place here, you can sit down to read a book, look emailed and maybe even take pictures with it.– said Xavier Veilhan, Sculptor
“The connection between Moliere, who was the favorite artist of Louis XIV, is written in our history. To us, he is like Mozart in Salzburg. I think it is important for a city, in its DNA, to celebrate its great writers, its great authors. “For us, it is very important to have a statue of Moliere at the entrance of our city.”– said the mayor of Versailles François de Mazières.
Molier, who lived in the so-called “golden age” of the absolute monarchy, formed a troupe of nine actors, which he called the “Royal Theater”, where he simultaneously acted as an actor, director, troupe leader and lyricist.
Coming out of the rigid rules of the time, he created comedies that struck vices or negative phenomena and for the delicate topics he dealt with, he had a lot of trouble, he was often forced to rewrite the texts to escape censorship, while his courage paid and with excommunication.
