The head of the socialist parliamentary group, Taulant Balla, stated that there is zero chance that Bulgaria will lift its veto on northern Macedonia during a meeting of the National Council for European Integration.
Balla reiterated that Albania must do its homework set by the European Commission for this to happen.
“The chances for Bulgaria to lift its veto are almost zero. We know how difficult it is to make a resolution in the Bulgarian parliament to request an intergovernmental conference with Bulgaria. This is an issue that does not belong to us. This is the first meeting of an intensive series that we have to precede June. The fight against organized crime and money laundering is important. The progress report says and I am reading it; The European Commission recommends that criminal proceedings be instituted systematically against judges and prosecutors. What we are saying is that the homework that the EC has set for us to do intensively and immediately. In the next meetings, we will have the leaders of the prosecution, and SPAK, to take them one by one. The leading role is to monitor the tasks assigned to us. “Let the two representatives of the government who came to this meeting, the Minister of Interior and Mr. Koçi, listen carefully to what has been done.”said Balla.
While Jorida Tabaku said that the Bulgarian veto is being used by Rama as an obstacle when in fact one of the main criteria is the fight against organized crime.
“In fact, this is just a political rhetoric, and the tasks of the Albanian government are already very clear where the criterion for the fight against organized crime is among the main ones.”
“The beginning of some reporting roundtables of KKIE, regarding the 6 preconditions for the opening of negotiations and the holding of the First Intergovernmental Conference, has been a tradition to have a debate in parliament, but this has not happened, so I hope that this meeting be a good opportunity for a new approach to the oversight role that Parliament should have for European integration “said Tabaku.
“It should be added that this is an ongoing process, and a responsibility for all of us as members of the KKIE but also for the deputies themselves to exercise all parliamentary control.”
Tabaku in her first speech shared three essential issues which are being addressed in this meeting.
“First of all, referring to the progress report of the European Commission, the issues on organized crime remain very sensitive. Referring to the Porgres report, which states that “organized crime remains a concern. The report emphasizes that efforts and political will need to be increased towards consolidating the history of sequestration and confiscation of criminal assets, as well as creating a solid history in the fight against organized crime. “From the official data so far, the number of senior officials who are under investigation remains low, emphasizing that the investigation has not ended with a sentencing decision by the court.”
“Here we must focus on an important element, such as electoral crime, which is even more sensitive for the opposition, when we see an obstructed approach to the two files of cases 184 and 339, which proves once again the pronounced lack of impunity of senior officials.
Second is the issue of money laundering and corruption. For two years, Albania has been included in the gray list of MoneyVal, which proves a lack of political will to fight organized crime. Referring to the SHISH report that “Organized crime in Albania has a connection with international organized crime and has adapted different ways of interacting against law enforcement agencies. Criminal groups in the country have more or less the same “format” of business; drug trafficking and illicit drug trafficking, economic crimes, smuggling and so on. ”
Thirdly, the issue of immigration remains important for the European Commission, where considerable efforts are required by the government, which proves a low political will.
