The President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen openly articulated that Ukraine already has a “very clear European perspective” after the decision of the European Union to grant it the status of a candidate country.
Ukraine is a candidate country to join the European Union, something that seemed almost unthinkable just five months ago.
So today is, first of all, a reason to celebrate this historic moment, a victory of determination and a victory for the entire movement that began eight years ago on the Maidan.
But in a virtual speech to Ukrainian lawmakers, the European bloc’s top official also reminded them of their homework, urging them to move forward with anti-corruption reforms, not forgetting to mention the oligarchs.
Prevention and fight against corruption has been high on your agenda, you have created an impressive system against it. But now these institutions need a boost and the right people in high positions.
Ukraine is the only country in Europe’s Eastern Partnership that has passed a law to crack down on oligarchs’ control of economic and political life. For this I congratulate you, but now we must focus on the successful implementation of this law.
Von der Leyen’s speech was met with applause in the Ukrainian parliament. She also called for laws to be voted in accordance with the norms promoted by the Council of Europe to improve the selection procedures of independent judges of the Constitutional Court.
“Institutions must function so that they fulfill people’s aspirations”, was her comment.
