The government of North Macedonia on Wednesday approved new measures to deal with the economic crisis.
According to the decision, the export of wheat, flour, wood and pellets is prohibited from July 20, while the customs tax for the import of household oil is removed until the end of the year.
The Government’s decision comes after information about the doubling of the price of wood for heating up to 80 euros per cubic meter, and of pellets for heating, from 200 to about 400 euros per ton.
“The decision was taken to avoid abuses by traders and producers, and to protect local production, the market and citizens”, says the announcement of the Ministry of Economy, which has proposed the measures approved by the Government.
According to the announcement, a similar action was taken with wheat, flour and other wheat products, in order to prevent misuse in the local market.
The grain export ban will be in effect until the end of the year.
However, the Government has not yet come up with measures for protection from the possible energy crisis.
The Deputy Prime Minister for economic affairs, Fatmir Bytyqi, said that he believes that the Government is managing to cope with the world crisis and protect households, while also warning of measures in the energy sector.
“Soon we will come up with concrete measures. Two months ago we called for savings measures, but unfortunately we can say that the appeals were not adequate, or did not give any results. It is the same in all other countries. We must do everything to survive this serious crisis”, Bytyqi declared.
It is not yet known who will heat the residents of Skopje this winter, as BEG (Balkan Energy Group) lost all licenses.
The government says that efforts are being made for the Electroeconomy of North Macedonia (ESM) to take over the operation.
The government of North Macedonia has also previously approved measures for protection from the crisis, prohibiting the export of flour, and in particular of oil, after the doubling of the retail price, but the measures have not succeeded in stopping the increase in prices.
Such measures have also been taken for fuel, but the price continues to be corrected on a daily basis, depending on the movement in the world markets.
