After several delays, the Montenegrin government finally decided to take a clear stance by imposing sanctions on Russia for its attack on Ukraine.
“A package of restrictive measures against Russia has just been approved! Thank you to all the ministers for the cooperation! ”, Announced the Deputy Prime Minister of Montenegro Dritan Abazovic through a post on Twitter.
Montenegrin airspace has meanwhile been closed to Russian aircraft because such a move did not require a formal executive decision. Due to the absence of Prime Minister Zdravko Krivokapic, today’s session was chaired by Abazovic himself. On March 1, Montenegro openly joined the European Union-approved sanctions against Moscow, but the Krivokapic government avoided taking a decision that would allow their implementation in practice.
She herself was punished with a no-confidence vote in early February this year, but the new prime minister has not yet been elected. Among the most curved names for the post is that of Abazovic. The young politician, but who is being strongly imposed on the domestic scene, insisted that the Government adopt a decision on the implementation of sanctions against Russian citizens who are on the black list of the European Union.
The EU and the United States have repeatedly called on Podgorica to formalize sanctions against Russia.
