Russia has held a mourning ceremony for the destruction of the Black Sea warship that sank in the Black Sea.
The rocket cruiser sank after several explosions on board. The ceremony took place in Sevastopol, at the base of the Russian-annexed Crimea.
Ukraine says it hit Moscow with two anti-ship missiles, which set the ship on fire. At the ceremony, Captain Sergei Gorbachev said that Moscow “was a symbol of our strength, of hope, of the revival of the fleet in the 1990s.”
One priest said the loss of Moscow was “a tragedy for the thousands of people who served there for more than 20 years.”
The Soviet-built ship was playing a major role in coordinating fleet operations outside Ukraine. Russia has not provided casualty figures regarding Moscow, while the Defense Ministry said the crew was rescued by other fleet ships in the area.
Ilya Ponomaryov, a former Russian MP now living in Kiev, claims that only 58 crew members out of 510 survived, but gives no further evidence.
According to Ukrainian officials, the ship’s captain Anton Kuprin is among the victims who lost their lives when the ship caught fire and exploded.
