He has previously openly stated that he wanted to win a new term as president by campaigning for the PD-SMI during the elections.
According to Bollino, the majority has no political benefit from the request for Meta’s dismissal, because his term ends in April.
“The majority does not have a political benefit that Meta’s mandate ends. There is no question that the president has a violating position, he has made election campaigns, against the government. The president himself stated, the plan was to win another term with a new majority with the SMI and PD. He would win a new term as president. This is an open violation of the neutral position. Even the Constitutional Court is surprised by the attitudes of the president. The judges are surprised. It may even have a political purpose, that the assembly is not a neutral body. “Why should we scandalize him? The SP should not be independent, but the president.”, said Bollino.
The voluminous files received shortly before the start of the session in the Constitutional Court were a sign that the defense of President Ilir Meta would not be easy, resulting in a delay in the process.
During the two hours, the lawyers of the head of state presented the facts that according to them, the process against Ilir Meta is a political revenge of the socialist majority and an institutional coup against the president.
The main pillar of the head of state’s defense was to question the legitimacy of the Assembly that fired Ilir Meta as President. Lawyer Bledar Dervishaj brought to attention the fact that in the transitional period the Assembly has no legitimacy to conduct investigative activities.
The President’s defense had prepared a 140-page file, while the constitutional judges had over 70 questions for the head of state’s lawyers who took 48 hours to prepare. The request postponed the court hearing to February 7.
On June 9 last year, with 104 votes in favor, the Assembly of the last Legislature decided to dismiss the President, and now a constitutional decision is needed for Meta to be dismissed.
