Brazilian lawmakers have filed a lawsuit in the Supreme Court against the country’s president, Jair Bolsonaro, for postponing the vaccination of children aged 5 to 11 despite a recommendation made by the National Agency for Health Surveillance (ANVISA).
Senator Alessandro Vieira and MP Tabata Amaral, both opposition figures, argue that the head of state and Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga are suspected of committing a crime by creating artificial barriers and delays in purchasing vaccines for minors.
Bolsonaro, who has an 11-year-old daughter, criticized the free start of child vaccination provided by ANVISA, arguing that “this would have been a very hasty decision”.
To raise awareness on the subject, the government today launched an online consultation, inviting parents to comment on the issue. The votes will be collected by January 2, 2022, while on January 5, the Brazilian Ministry of Health will hold a meeting to decide whether children will be vaccinated or not.
