British Prime Minister Boris Johnson emphasized on Tuesday in parliament that he will remain in power, despite the resignations of some of his cabinet ministers yesterday and today.
Mr. Johnson’s power received a heavy blow especially from the resignations of the Secretary of the Treasury, Rishi Sunak, and the Secretary of Health, Sajid Javid. They said they could no longer support the prime minister because of his handling of a series of scandals, including the case of a senior official accused of sexual harassment.
The prime minister immediately replaced the resigned members of the cabinet, however, British media reports that support for Mr. Johnson within his own party is falling rapidly.
“Is there any circumstance for which the prime minister thinks it is worth resigning?”
This question was asked today in the British Parliament by one of the MPs of the Conservative Party, clearly showing that support for Prime Minister Boris Johnson is continuing to fall in his party.
“The work of a prime minister in difficult circumstances, when he has been given a mandate with an extraordinary mission, is to move forward,” replied the prime minister, recalling that his resignation would also jeopardize support for the Ukrainian people, who are facing with Russian aggression.
Prime Minister Johnson has been accused several times of the way he has handled a number of scandals, including the case of Mr. Chris Pincher, who despite allegations of sexual harassment, was kept in an important government position.
“He knew that the accused minister has done such behavior before, but still he elevated him to office. Why?” asked the leader of the opposition Labor Party, Kei Starmer.
“As soon as I was informed about the charges against him, he lost his status as a conservative MP. He is now the subject of an independent investigation by the complaints commission. I also want to tell the speaker of the parliament that I hate bullying and abuse of power anywhere, in my party, in parliament or in other parties,” said Mr. Johnson.
The resignations of Treasury Secretary Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Sajid Javid followed months of discontent within the Conservative Party over the prime minister’s judgment and ethics.
In his resignation letter, Mr. Sunak pointed out that “the public rightly expected that the government would be run properly, with competence and seriousness.” Prime Minister Johnson has already appointed their replacements, but the resignations continued today from other members of the government.
The British Prime Minister has been facing accusations for some time, including for organizing parties during the coronavirus pandemic. Opponents of Prime Minister Johnson hope to change the party’s rules to allow another motion of no confidence. The British prime minister survived such a vote in June.
