Race against time to rescue 9-year-old Afghan in 10m deep well after 5-year-old Rayan tragedy in Morocco (photos)

The boy, known locally as Haidar, has fallen into the deep well and workers were digging trying to reach him in the village of Shokok in the southern Afghan province of Zabul.

The operation comes two weeks after a similar attempt to rescue five-year-old Rayan Awram from a deeper well ended in tragedy in Morocco, after it remained trapped for four days at a depth of more than 30 meters underground.

“Are you okay my son?” the boy’s father is heard in the footage published from the scene. “Talk to me and do not cry. “We are working to get him out,” said his father.

“Okay, I will keep talking,” the boy replies in a complaining voice.

The video was recorded by emergency workers lowering a rope camera into the narrow well.

Local officials said the boy appears to have remained at a depth of just over 10 meters in the gallery about 25 meters long.

Rescue crews were digging a ditch parallel to the well to reach the spot where the child was trapped.

The attempt appears to be the same as that attempted by groups in Morocco earlier this month when the late Rayan fell into a 32-meter well outside his home in the northern province of Chefchaouen.

But in that case, rescue teams reached the little boy only after four days when he could not be brought back to life.
