Tennis star Rafael Nadal’s preparations for the upcoming championship have suffered a significant setback following the deterioration of a mini-fracture in the ribs and a disturbing episode after Sunday’s 3-0 loss to Taylor Fritz in the final of the American ‘Indian Wells’ competition.
Nadal had started to feel concerns on the left side of his chest in the semifinals against compatriot Carlos Alcaraz.
His injury had worsened in the final against the American, after which Nadal said he had “difficulty breathing and sharp pain in the injury area.”
Nadal said he would be out of action for at least 4-6 weeks, missing the Monte Carlo tournament and possibly the Barcelona Open.
Upon return Nadal must prepare for a possible showdown with Novak Djokovic in the French Open competition.
Djokovic has only participated in one competition in three months of his unvaccinated status.
