The Netherlands’s largest port city has agreed to spend weeks dismantling a historic bridge to announce the passing of billionaire Jeff Bezos’s new giant yacht, which is due to hit the sea in the summer.
Amazon founder’s new 140-meter-long, three-mast yacht is under construction in the Netherlands and appears to be too high to cross under the bridge Koningshaven in Rotterdam, which can only allow vehicles to pass 45 meters high writes the NL Times.
The boat construction company Oceano asked the authorities in Rotterdam to temporarily dismantle the famous bridge pledging to reimburse the city for the costs.
Dismantling and reassembling the bridge known locally as “De Hef” is expected to take about two weeks.
“From an economic point of view, the municipality considers this a very important project,” says project manager Marcel Walravens.
“Rotterdam has also been declared the maritime capital of Europe, so shipbuilding activity is a key pillar of the country’s economy.”
The dismantling of the structure built in 1878 was met with outrage by conservation officials who said the city had vowed not to demolish De Hef after the 2017 major restoration.
“Employment is important but there are limits to what can be done or done to our heritage.”
Another local leader said Bezos was “overreacting,” as he denounced other dubious Amazon practices.
“This man has earned his money by cutting jobs, avoiding taxes and regulations, and now he wants to dismantle our beautiful national monument,” said local politician Stephan Leewis.
The Bezos Y721 yacht will be one of the largest ships ever built in the Netherlands, which is one of the construction centers of luxury boats.
