Russia has added jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny and several of its allies to its list of “terrorists and extremists.”
Russian authorities added Navalny and five of his associates, Lyubov Sobol, Vyacheslav Gimadi, Georgy Alburov, Lilia Chanysheva, and Ruslan Shaveddinov, on January 25, placing them on a par with right-wing nationalist groups and foreign terrorist organizations such as the Taliban and the so-called Islamic State.
Under Russian law, the bank accounts of these individuals added to the list must be blocked immediately.
Less than two weeks ago, two of Navalny’s close associates, Leonid Volkov and Ivan Zhdanov, were added to the list.
Last year, the Moscow City Court declared all Navalny-affiliated organizations extremists, barring Navalny-linked individuals and its network in Russia from running for public office.
This decision also provides for imprisonment for activists who have worked with Navalny organizations.
Navalny himself has been incarcerated since February 2021.
He was arrested after returning to Russia from Germany, where he was treated for almost fatal poisoning with a nerve agent, Novichok.
Navalny believes the poisoning was ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The Kremlin denies having played a role in the case.
