Russia will stop sending gas to Poland from tomorrow morning, according to the Polish state natural gas company PGNiG.
Gazprom justified the suspension under new payment rules announced on March 31, according to which “unfriendly countries” must pay for Russian gas in rubles. PGNiG, which mbestates ne gazin rus per partenme te large te her, has refused to pay in Russian currency.
However, the suspension of supplies will not pose an immediate threat to supplies in Poland. PGNiG said its underground gas storage is almost 80% full and summer is coming, so demand is lower.
Poland also has alternative sources of supply. It has a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Swinoujscie on the Baltic coast and connections to pipelines with Germany and the Czech Republic.
