Seven people were killed Thursday by Russian bombardment of Ukraine’s second largest city, Kharkiv, according to a regional official, as many residents have returned after Russia’s attempts to occupy the eastern city were repulsed.
“Today the enemy fired insidiously at Kharkiv,” regional governor Oleg Sinegubov said on social media.
“Seven civilians were killed and 17 others were injured, including a nine-year-old child,” he said after the attacks hit at least three neighborhoods near the Russian border.
Kharkiv Mayor Igor Terekhov called on people to find shelter after the attacks.
“Enemy troops are bombing our city again,” he said in a Telegram video.
“I urge you to stay in safe places, in basements, shelters and subway stations.”
He said the city subway, which resumed work this week after being used primarily as a shelter since the Russian occupation, will continue to function but will also provide a safe space for residents.
“We will not stop the subway, but we will divide special sectors where you can stay and take refuge from the bombing,” Terekhov said.
“Now the most important thing is to save lives.”
Kharkiv, the city on the northeastern tip of Ukraine near the Russian border, was heavily bombed by Moscow forces at the beginning of their occupation, which began on February 24.
After heavy fighting that severely damaged the city, Ukrainian forces managed to retain control of Kharkiv.
