Russian forces are continuing artillery attacks in southeastern Ukraine as they try to advance toward the city of Odessa and other parts of the region. VOA’s Yan Boechat reports from the Zaporizhia region of southern Ukraine.
Russian planes fly low and use mechanisms to protect themselves against anti-aircraft missiles, before attacking Ukrainian positions.
On the ground, the result is destruction.
A small village in the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine has been left almost empty.
Regions look like ghost towns already.
You can only spot soldiers standing in the trenches.
Everything seems calm when no bombs are falling.
Everything seems peaceful, but it is so only in appearance.
In such countries the war is being waged for Ukraine.
Ihori lives in Kamianske, one of the last positions held by Ukraine in southern Zaporizhia, in southern Ukraine. This small town had fallen under Russian control and only a month ago was recaptured by Ukrainian soldiers.
Ihori says he has nowhere to go. He has no friends or family and says he prefers to stay here.
“Health no longer allows us to run all the time to the shelter. Many of those who fled were with health problems, heart problems. My wife e.g. has foot problems. They distribute food to us. But, here we are. Both of us, only on this road “Ihori tells VOA.
He lives with his wife, Iryna, and their dogs who are increasingly afraid of constant outbreaks.
Iryna tells VOA that they have been in the shelter for over three months.
“When the bombs fall, we stay here. This is how we live. The bombings have been going on for three months. We go out when there is no bombing. At night we sleep underground as it is not known when they may strike again. “It is more dangerous to run to the shelter.”says Iryna.
The soldiers stand in the trenches not far from there. An endless wait.
The machines dug trenches in the land that was to produce wheat already.
When not bombed, soldiers observe for possible enemy movements.
They enjoy the spring sun in the Donbas region and even plant onions in the trenches.
In this artillery battle, trenches are turned into homes for soldiers. They eat here, sleep here and often even die here.
A soldier tells VOA how they buried one of their colleagues who was hit directly by a Russian missile.
Spring has brought back the green and yellow colors throughout this region of Ukraine.
When artillery is not hitting, to walk along a road, to be likened to something peaceful.
But without delay, holes in the ground, unexploded ordnance, and wrecked cars remind us that war is taking place right here.
