The Ministry of Energy in Greece is considering the possibility of storing natural gas in Italy and Bulgaria to provide sufficient supplies for the winter season 2022-2023, writes the Greek newspaper Kathimerini.
The European Commission urges all EU member states that do not have gas storage facilities to provide agreements with countries that have such warehouses by November 1 of this year, for amounts equivalent to 15% of annual consumption .
In the case of Greece, the annual consumption of natural gas in 2020 was 5.8 billion cubic meters, which means that the amount needed to be secured through storage is 0.9 billion mW. Bulgaria has a natural gas storage facility, to which the Hellenic Gas Transmission System Operator (DESFA) is connected, with a second interconnection point that will soon start operating via the Greece-Bulgaria Gas Interconnector. (IGB).
But the Bulgarian underground facility has a relatively limited capacity of 0.6 billion megabytes, the Greek daily continues, while the storage capacity in Italy is about 20 billion megabytes. With the latter, Greece is connected through Albania and the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP). In this case the required quantities can be provided on the basis of exchange agreements.
