Tests for Covid-19 are intended to accompany the first facilitation steps, self-tests and rapid tests. Personal tests for home use have been approved in Germany since last week.
Everyone should be eligible for a quick free weekly test for Covid-19, starting March 8th. The tests will be performed in municipal centers, but also by doctors in private clinics.
Systematic tests will also be available in businesses as well as in day schools and kindergartens. The federal government wants to consult with business this week about tests across companies.
The sale of personal tests for Covid-19 in the German retail trade starts on Saturday (06.03.) A test package includes five tests for a nasal tampon, the price is 24.99 euros per pack. Test kits are available directly at the checkout. Prior to Aldi, healthcare, chemical and cosmetic stores dm and Rossmann had announced the start of sales for personal tests for personal use next week.
At the end of February, the Federal Institute for Medicines and Medicinal Products issued the first emergency approvals for tests for personal use by non-physicians.
The difference between quick tests and self tests
It is unclear how many tests are currently available and how many have been ordered. The test strategy will be implemented gradually by early April.
Two different tests are used against Covid-19: on the one hand, quick tests by trained staff and on the other, personal tests for amateurs. The question of whether these tests will work across Germany next week is still open.
For Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU), uncomplicated self-tests are tests of the future. Unlike previous quick tests, these are currently not in large numbers. They will now be “procured step by step” ./ DW
