The resolution recently approved by the European Parliament was hailed as its first document underlining the need for a final agreement based on mutual recognition between Serbia and Kosovo.
But the Serbian Prime Minister, Ana Bërnabiç, has questioned this.
“The European Commission in its official document, for the negotiating position of chapter 35, which in our case has to do with Kosovo and the normalization of relations with Pristina, does not mention recognition anywhere, but says the all-round normalization of relations with Pristina. I can only guess that the European Parliament will instruct the European Commission to change this negotiating position. Then, it is not clear to me how he will change the negotiating position in the middle of the negotiation process, because these are not minor changes in the rules. There will be big changes. As far as that is concerned, the ball is already in Brussels’ court. That’s why I’m asking, I’m asking the EU to tell us if the rules of the game are changing now or if we still have this negotiating position that we had in the dialogue”, said Bernabic.
Five EU states do not recognize Kosovo, but the EP is the only institution that treats Kosovo as a state.
In its resolution, the 5 countries in question were called to finally recognize the independence of Kosovo, while in the three reports approved on July 6 for Kosovo, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, an appeal was made for support of their European perspective.
