The government has approved in the last meeting the draft law for the contract with the company Bechtel for the construction of the Skavica hydropower plant, a major project that will be supported with 500 million dollars by the US government for its construction.
According to the draft law, the contract will be divided into two phases, where the first phase includes the preparatory one and the company’s proposal to the contracting authority, while the second phase of the contract consists in the design and construction of this energy work.
After the presentation of the Skavica project in June, the Minister of Infrastructure Belinda Balluku and the US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Kith Krack signed in Tirana a memorandum of cooperation in October last year, where they agreed that Bechtel company, in addition to design and construction, would provide financing. of the project through a soft loan of $ 500 million.
With the construction of this energy project, the government intends to provide solutions to the problem of floods in the areas of Shkodra plain, while aiming, among other things, to reduce the dependence on electricity imports and turn the country into an exporting power in case Skavica is a project successful.
