Northern Macedonia is taking serious action to fight terrorism or prevent any activity that could jeopardize the security situation, Northern Macedonia’s Interior Minister Oliver Spasovski said on Friday.
Spasovski was asked if there were any indications that the security situation in the country could deteriorate, whether regarding the non-receipt of the date for the start of talks with the European Union, alarms about “fake bombs”, or other aspects related to the region in general.
After the opening of a police facility in Skopje, a donation from the United States, Spasovski said that “currently there are no data on the deterioration of the security situation in northern Macedonia.”
“This is a serious challenge, for this reason all the competent authorities, the Ministry of Interior, the National Security Agency and the Intelligence Agency, are taking serious measures to fight terrorism or prevent any activity that could endanger the security situation. There are currently no reports of any breaches of the security situation in the country. All units within the Ministry of Interior and all agencies operate at the highest level. “In fact, recent false reports of terrorist acts have shown the level of readiness of the Macedonian police and agencies to face such a challenge,” Spasovski said.
Regarding the resocialization and reintegration of persons who have returned from wars outside Northern Macedonia, such as in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan, Spasovski said that “it is a very important process, as important as the prosecution of those who have committed crimes. Like that”.
The US Ambassador to Skopje, Kate Byrnes, also said that resocialization is a complex and difficult process, but, according to her, it is important for the institutions to focus on reintegration.
She stressed that regular communication is being held between the two governments on this issue.
“We have regular consultations on this. The United States is committed, not only as a NATO partner, but also bilaterally to continuing its capacity-building work. Part of this effort is being made through the International Criminal Investigation Support Program, to ensure that police officers receive the best possible training, as well as investigators to make it clearer how to use the battlefield evidence. in criminal investigations against terrorists returning to their home countries. “Also to make sure that the social programs that are being applied in support of the affected families, will receive the necessary assistance for re-socialization”, said Byrnes.
Currently, 13 people in northern Macedonia are serving prison sentences for involvement in foreign wars.
On July 18, 2021, 23 citizens of Northern Macedonia returned from the fighting zones in Syria and Iraq. Citizens of northern Macedonia have already been repatriated to war zones in Syria and Iraq.
In March 2019, the Skopje Criminal Court sentenced seven citizens of Northern Macedonia to 45 years in prison for participating in IS paramilitary formations.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, about 150 citizens of northern Macedonia have taken part in the wars in Syria and Iraq, as members of the paramilitary forces.rel
