Police were deployed today on the streets of the capital of Sri Lanka, Colombo after the president declared the emergency state again.
Friday’s general strike has stopped the entire country as protesting students outside parliament were hit with water pressure and tear gas by police.
President Rajapaksa’s state of emergency is the second in five weeks amid popular demonstrations since the country’s unprecedented economic crisis.
After weeks of fierce protests, the 22-million-strong South Asian country is completely suspended as it seeks the removal of the government.
Current emergency laws empower security forces to detain suspects for long periods without judicial obligation.
Rajapaksa initially declared a state of emergency on April 1-14 shortly after thousands of protesters attempted to raid his residence in the capital.
But the protests have not subsided but worsened, fueled by the country’s worst economic crisis since independence in 1948.
The new emergency declaration comes as thousands of demonstrators are trapped outside the president’s coastal office while other groups have attacked the flats of his ruling ministers.
