A student has been tortured and strangled to death by her ex-boyfriend after police reportedly ignored several calls to emergency services.
23-year-old Vera Pekhteleva was found dead strangled with an iron cable, after an attack that lasted three and a half hours.
She had gone to her ex-boyfriend’s house to get her belongings after the relationship broke down.
But 24-year-old Vladislav Kanyus locked the door and tortured the girl for several hours, banging her on the wall and banging her head, as reported by the evidence in the case.
As they listened to her desperate cries for help, the neighbors called the police, but the latter did not send officers to the address as they considered it a “domestic conflict”.
Local residents in Kemerovo, Siberia, heard Vera trying to leave, but all early on he had put her back inside.
They had tried to open the door and intervene, and finally broke it in order to save the student. But when they entered they found him strangled, with an iron cord.
Forensic officers found 56 separate wounds to her body, such as head wounds, cuts and fractures.
The mother of the unfortunate girl, Oksana Pekhteleva, has sued two police officers – Major Mikhail Balashov and Captain Dmitry Taritsyn – who are being investigated for neglecting complaints and reporting on the case.
An awareness campaign has erupted in anger after the killer Kanyus escaped the charge of “aggravated murder”, and could be sentenced to just 15 years in prison or released earlier.
The victim’s mother complains that she was beaten, tortured and degraded for three and a half hours, and this is not taken into account at all by the charge.
Singer Valeriya – who has also been a victim of domestic violence – has backed calls for a harsher sentence and is raising public awareness.
Even the well-known Russian activist against sexual violence, Alena Popova, warned: “The killer can receive a light sentence, even gain parole. “While officers can avoid punishment by receiving only a fine for negligence.”
Popova added: “This mindset of domestic violence has become the norm in Russia. “The state does not consider it a crime but an old family tradition, which should not be interfered with.”
