Israeli researchers have found that the vaccine protects against possible subsequent illness after infection with Corona and even the common cold. On the other hand, many healed people become infected with Omicron.
Those who are vaccinated have a lower risk of developing Long-Covid symptoms – so called symptoms such as chronic fatigue or other illnesses that healers often report after being infected with Corona. This is shown by a preliminary study of doctors at the University Clinic “Bar-Ilan” in Safed, Israel, which was published on 25.01. in the scientific journal Nature. The cases that the doctors have examined are all related to the first phase of the vaccination campaign, ie from March 2021.
The researchers asked about their project more than 3,000 people tested by PCR for possible Long-Covid symptoms. 951 of them were proven to be infected. The result gives you the first data, that basic immunization helps you better defeat the infection. “This is another reason for vaccination,” said Michael Edelstein, an epidemiologist at the university.
Symptoms as rare as in those who have never been infected
The vaccine protects you from getting infected, but even if you are infected, the disease progresses more smoothly. This is also reflected in the long-term consequences of those who become ill with COVID-19. According to the study, vaccinated people are 54% less likely to have headaches. In the symptoms of chronic fatigue, the chances of vaccinated people to develop chronic fatigue are 64% less, muscle pain 68%. These values corresponded to data values from persons who had never been infected with SARS-CoV-2.
Long-COVID-symptoms are difficult to define
It is often very difficult for family physicians to clearly diagnose Long-COVID. Often patients do not feel taken seriously when making such complaints. Typical symptoms, such as fatigue, general weakness, dizziness, impaired concentration, muscle aches are rarely clearly associated with an infection that has passed. Long-COVID includes a large number of symptoms, which can also appear from other diseases. Therefore doctors find it difficult to clearly determine it, according to a study in Plosmedicine, of September 2021, for which researchers obtained the data of 273,618 healed from Corona.
According to the study, almost 60% of those infected with COVID-19 show symptoms six months after the disease. The flu also happens. 40% of those cured of the flu complain that they have symptoms close to Long-COVID even after six months. There are large differences between estimates of the incidence of Long-COVID onset based on what typical symptoms are taken into account. Thus the Helmholtz Association sees this frequency at around 10%. Clear diagnoses are likely to be taken here as the basis, only severe cases of Long-COVID.
The vaccine helps against cold viruses
Researchers at the Universities of Ulm and Amsterdam have found another reason why you should get vaccinated. Current vaccines on the market against Corona virus, SARS-CoV-2 offer a certain protection against previous Corona viruses (hCoV) that cause normal flu. They also work against the first sars viruses, such as SARS-CoV-1.
The team about Frank Kirchhoff from the Institute of Molecular Virology at the University of Ulm writes in a study published Jan 25 in Clinical Infectious Diseases that vaccines lead to efficient cross-neutralization of SARS-CoV-1, but not MERS-CoV. On average, a vaccine significantly increases its neutralizing activity against (cold viruses), hCoV-OC43, -NL63 und -229E. “
More and more healers are affected by Omikron
Among other things, researchers in an extended British study have concluded that nearly a third of people who were infected with the Corona virus between 5-20 January 2022 have previously had a Corona infection. The study, part of the REACT (Real-time Assessment of Community Transmission) science program, involved 100,500 people who had developed an antigen test in this time frame. Because the data is based on information provided by the persons themselves, the figures should be viewed with caution, say the study authors./DW
