In the village of Shtaval in the municipality of Sjenica in Serbia, on Tuesday, May 10, excavations began on suspicion of a mass grave with the bodies of Albanians killed during the recent war in Kosovo.
The Commission for Missing Persons of the Government of Serbia, through a notification has confirmed the start of the excavations, saying that the order to start this process was given by the War Crimes Prosecution in Serbia.
“A field search is needed to determine exactly whether there are remains of persons declared missing, which sends a clear message to their families that the competent authorities of the Republic of Serbia have decided to check all information to find their loved ones “, it is said in the announcement of the Commission for Missing Persons of the Government of Serbia.
The decision to excavate at this location came after the Kosovo Government Commission on Missing Persons provided information on suspicions of mass graves.
Serbian authorities said the search of the site will continue until the facts needed to determine the exact location of a possible mass grave are determined and clarified.
The Chairman of the Commission of the Government of Serbia for Missing Persons, Veljko Odalovi., Had announced the conduct of excavations at this location on April 27 this year.
In a statement to Radio Free Europe, Andin Hoti, head of the Government Commission on Missing Persons in Kosovo, had accused the Serbian side of not providing information on the fate of missing persons.
“It should be [çështje] humanitarian, but I do not know that it has ever been treated as humanitarian. Serbia has provided so little information about Kizhevak and Rudnica… Ten years have passed since our teams, in both locations in Serbia, because Serbia plays games by providing accurate information on where the mass graves are, until satellite images come to us from to Kosovo’s friendly countries, so that we can find them “, says Hoti, without specifying which countries he is talking about.
Hoti had said that Serbia is still continuing the “game” by not providing information.
Kosovar officials had repeatedly raised suspicions about the existence of a mass grave in the Serbian village of Shtaval.
This fact was further strengthened when in Kizhevak, in the municipality of Raska near the border with Kosovo, on November 16, 2020, the remains of a number of Albanian civilians killed during the war in Kosovo were found.
This was the fifth location in Serbia where the bodies of Kosovars killed in the 98-99 war were found.
According to non-governmental organizations, the bodies of about a thousand Kosovars killed were found in mass graves in Serbia.
About 1,600 other people are still missing in Kosovo, mostly from the Albanian community./REL
