A 52-year-old climber has lost consciousness in the final stages of climbing to the top of the world’s third highest mountain.
The experienced Indian climber died during the recent push to capture the Kanchenjunga peak, the third highest in the world, in the Himalayan complex, authorities said.
This is the third death in two months reported from the Himalayan camps in Nepal, since the opening of the mountaineering season in March.
Narayanan Iyer, 52, died at an altitude of 8,200m on Thursday as he tried to reach an altitude of 8,586m, said Nivesh Karki, an official with the company that organized the expedition.
“Iyer’s guide advised him to return after he started to feel unwell, but the climber refused,” Karki said, confirming his death.
“He was slower than the others and the two guides had helped him because he was exhausted, he could not continue, and then he lost consciousness.”
There were several other groups of climbers on the mountain trail, including a group from Pakistan, one of whom Sirbaz Khan became the first person from that place to climb ten peaks over 8,000m high.
Last month a Greek mountaineer and a mountain guide from Nepal lost their lives on the peak trails.
Mountaineering is the main tourist and employment attraction in Nepal, home to eight of the world’s 14 highest peaks, including the highest Everest.
More than 900 foreign climbers have received permission to climb the 26 peaks of the Himalayas in Nepal, including Everest, during the current season which closes at the end of the month.
